autora?
¡Desde que puedo recordar! Siempre he querido escribir,
Me encanta vivir mi sueño :)
escuchado!).
tipo James Bond ("Nobody Does it Better" o "A sexy, paranormal Law &
no tenía nada.
Me
Me
Y tiendo a
millones a mi disposición... y, um, a ¡Damien!
tortilla y salsa. Me encanta bucear.
Londres!
¡¡¡Muchas Gracias!!!
Hello Julie, First and foremost, I would like to thank you for your
time on this interview. As a blogger, it truly means a lot and I greatly appreciate it.
You’re very welcome! Sorry this took so long to get to you; I thought
I’d finished and sent it … but, ah, nope!
I wrote all through school — newspapers and short stories, poems and
scribbles — but ended up in law school instead of in journalism or some other salaried writing job.
But
the writing bug is persistent, and I was hooked. I finally carved
time out of my legal career and wrote a romance novel. The first one
didn’t sell, but the second one did, and since then, I’ve written three
or more romances (and books in other genres) every year since! I love
living my dream :)
2.How did the story of Nikki and Damien begin?
3.Who was your inspiration when you created the sexy businessman Damien Stark?
Here’s
what happened (I tell this story at writers conferences a lot, so some
of you may
have heard it!). I’ve always written sexy books, but before Release Me,
most were plot or situationally driven rather than character driven.
That is to say, the kernel of the idea would be something like “A female
writer with a male pen name who is writing
James Bond type books needs to find someone to pretend to be the author
for public appearances” (Nobody Does it Better) or “A sexy, paranormal
Law & Order” (my Shadow Keepers series).
I
was actually writing the Shadow Keepers when my publisher dropped the
series, leaving me
unemployed. At the time, my husband was working as an elementary school
librarian. I’ve always been the primary breadwinner in the family (I was
a lawyer before quitting to write full time in 2004) and suddenly I had
nothing coming in. This was in 2011 when
you may or may not know, but publishing was changing dramatically b/c of
the rise of indie publishing.
Anyway,
while I was working on a new proposal to sell, my editor asked if I
wanted to write
a book “like Fifty Shades.” Now, I’d heard of 50, but I hadn’t read it.
But it sounded intriguing, and I knew the basic trope, so I said yes.
She wanted an idea of what I would write, so I came up with this:
Damien Starck (yes, that’s how I originally spelled it) knows power. Body. Mind. Money.
In his entire adult life nothing he's wanted has slipped out of his grasp. And there's nothing
that he's wanted more than Nichole Fairchild. To sink inside her, to claim her. To possess her, wholly and complete.
And Damien's not a man who takes no for an answer.
From
her very first pageant at age five, Southern belle Nikki Fairchild's
understood that
it's not her anyone sees. It's just her body and picture perfect face.
Now that she's got a real job in Los Angeles, though, she's determined
to make her way in the world by virtue of her mind. Not her tits. Not
her cheekbones. Not her body.
But
when she meets Damien at an art opening, Nikki's determination
falters. There's no denying
the arousal in his eyes--and as much as she wishes she could toss her
champagne in his face and tell him to go to hell, she can't help but
imagine what those strong hands would feel like stroking her arms,
caressing her breasts, making her come...
And when he makes her a scandalous offer, Nikki can only hope that she'll be able to keep
her head, even while Damien's touch breaks her into a million little pieces.
***
Me again!
My
editor loved it and, more important, I loved thinking about the
characters and writing
that blurb. Because as you can see, it’s character driven. It truly
started out a just a Boy Wants Girl story, then a Damaged Boy Wants
Damaged Girl story. And it wasn’t until the very end of pondering that
the plot element of the painting came to my mind —
and that came to me once I realized what Nikki’s issue was, since
because of that being the subject of a nude would be a problem for her.
Anyway,
going through that process and then writing that book and all of the
ones that followed
really cemented for me how much I absolutely love writing really
character-driven stuff. Don’t get me wrong, I love the others, too, but
that’s my favorite (and I think that’s why I love the Demon books so
much, too. They’re heavy on the plot, but also very
character driven).
So that’s how I got started!
My
imagination!! I
wanted a billionaire because, obviously, the mandate was to go with the
same tropes as 50. But I wanted something other than an heir or just a
guy who made it
big. I know very little about sports, but I did know about Andre Agassi
who took his tennis money and made a fortune. And I tend to think
tennis players are very sexy. As for his eyes, I don’t remember why I
wanted them dual colored—I just wanted him to be
a little different, I think. And that is modeled after David Bowie.
4.Why was the Stark Serie the elected ones to be published in Spanish?
5.Do you plan to visit Latin America to promote your books? Or is it something you would
like to be able to plan in the future?
I
can’t claim any responsibility at all, LOL! My publisher owns the
foreign rights, and the way it works is that the foreign agent “shops”
the book to various territories. I was super excited that the Stark
books were picked up for the Spanish language territories! Yay!
I would love to, but with two kids, travel isn’t always easy, so it’s
not currently on my agenda.
That’s a really hard question, as books are a lot like children. But
I guess the two would be Carpe Demon and Release Me, because both of those books changed my life!
Hmm.
That’s a hard question, and one I can’t really answer. All the
characters are unique
— like an acting experiment, where I have to get into character and go
on stage. I think Dallas (Deepest Kiss, etc.) might be the hardest if I
had to pick, but only because the issues he and Jane faced were so, so,
so intense.
Nikki! Because I’d love the freedom of having billions at my disposal … and, um, Damien!
Absolutely.
Unfortunately, for books that are owned by my US publisher,
that choice isn’t up to me at all; when they buy the books, they bought
World Rights. So if a Spanish publisher doesn’t pick up the book, I
don’t have the legal right to hire a translator and publish it myself.
But
for books that I publish myself (“Indie” books) then if a foreign
publisher doesn’t pick up the rights, I hope to hire a translator on my
own and publish the book in Spanish (and other languages).
Hmm. Let’s see … I have a weakness for tortilla chips and salsa. I
love to SCUBA dive. I was once scammed by a con artist in London!
Thank you so much!
